McLean Community Center Around Town, Art & Culture

The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in May 2023. Please check the center’s website, mcleancenter.org, for up-to-date information. Residents of the center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

The Alden’s foreign language movie series is curated by Performing Arts Director Sarah Schallern Treff, with more than a little help from audience members! The series has a few surprises thrown in. Schedule subject to change.

Unruly Theatre Project

Come enjoy a night of laughs on us! (the) Unruly Improv is The Alden’s professional teen improv company dedicated to bringing comedic performances to the community. In May 2022, UTP was named 1st place Champions at Improvicon of Northern Virginia!

“The Pa’akai We Bring”

This original production introduces young audiences to the Native Hawaiian relationship to pa‘akai (salt).  Traditionally, pa‘akai is food, medicine, a sacrament and a treasured gift. The play follows a family with multiple generations of salt farmers on the island of Kauai, mixing in ancient stories, hula, live music, original songs and plenty of audience participation into a tasty potluck of performance, joyously served up with aloha. “One of American Theatre’s Top 20 Theatres to Take Your Kids To.” – American Theatre Magazine.

Jewish American Heritage Month Event
“L’Chaim” Jewish Legacy of Broadway

From the stages of the lower east side to the bright lights of Broadway, “L’Chaim” is a musical journey that pays tribute to the Jewish legacy of musical theater by exploring and celebrating the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists. Rooted in history, heritage and tradition, four Jewish performers bring to life the most iconic songs from the stage of past and present and the historical stories that go with them.

Friday, May 12, 7 p.m.

Admission: $5. Registration is required.

This event was designed and planned by local high school students specifically for high school students. Local teens come and blow off steam after the completion of your AP testing! Join McLean-area high school students, McLean Community Center’s (MCC) Youth Governing Board members and the MCC Youth Ambassadors to enjoy a fun evening of indoor and outdoor amusements, including a DJ, dancing, concessions, games, a photo booth and delicious food and drinks.

“The Lusty Month of May”

The ancient Irish festival of Beltane (May Day) signaled the end of winter and the coming of spring. Come hear Washington, D.C.’s award-winning folk and Celtic ensemble, the OCEAN Celtic Quartet, in a program of traditional and original music celebrating the return of the sun and the greening of the land. OCEAN’s soaring vocals, fiery fiddle tunes and rollicking button accordion will have your heart swelling and your toes tapping, while you sing along with songs that stretch back for centuries… songs of love, lust and everything in between.

It’s the Place to Be!

Need fun? Bring your friends and family and celebrate McLean’s biggest annual festival. This event draws approximately 10,000+ patrons throughout the day. Enjoy music, games, balloon animals, a petting zoo, amusements, sponsors, exhibitors, gourmet food trucks, large and small carnival rides and much more! Ride tickets can be pre-purchased online and are also sold onsite. MCC Governing Board Elections will be held from10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
