Celebrate Memorial Day and the long weekend with these local events centered on honoring our service men and women. 

24th Annual Ride of the Patriots

Sunday, May 26
6:30am – 5:00pm

Begins with a pancake breakfast and an Opening Ceremony that brings the community and the bikers together. City leaders, State and Federal Delegates, the Fairfax High School Band, Fairfax City, and County Fire and Police units, the Northern Virginia Firefighters Emerald Society Pipe Band, the American Legion, Honor Guards, etc., have active parts in the event Sunday morning. Spectators from the community line Fairfax Boulevard to recognize the riders and honor them this Memorial Day weekend.

Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony

The 156th National Memorial Day Observance, recognizing and commemorating the fallen men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, is scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2024, at 11 a.m., in the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia.

The annual event is free and open to the public. Seating in the amphitheater is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scheduled events for the observance include: the United States Air Force Band’s Singing Sergeants and the U.S. Coast Guard Band performing a prelude in the amphitheater at 10:15 a.m.; a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier conducted by a joint service team; and the national observance inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. Attendance for the annual wreath-laying ceremony will be limited this year to official participants.

Also throughout Memorial Day Weekend visitors can also experience “Flags In” – when during an approximately three-hour period, the soldiers place flags in front of the approximately 220,000 headstones and at the bottom of about 7,000 niche rows in the cemetery’s columbarium courts and the niche wall.

Herndon Memorial Day Observances at Chestnut Grove Cemetery

American Legion Post 184 of the Herndon-Reston community will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Herndon’s Chestnut Grove Cemetery on 27 May 2024 at 10:00 AM to commemorate all veterans. The Avenue of Flags will also be held at the cemetery from 8:00 – 5:00 PM.   Both events are open to community.

The Military Women’s Memorial 27th Annual Memorial Day Program

3:00pm – 5:00pm

Free and open to the public, the event includes formal military honors, remarks from current and former servicewomen from each of the military services, and a keynote address. As in previous years, members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program. Program to be held inside in the Memorial’s beautiful gallery.

Leesburg’s Memorial Day Observance

This annual observance will commemorate and honor those who have lost their lives in battle serving the United States. This ceremony is hosted by Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and includes the reverent laying of the wreaths at several war memorials.

City of Fairfax Memorial Day Ceremony

The American Legion Fairfax Post 177 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8469 invites the public to join them in the observation of Memorial Day with a program at the American Legion, Post 177.

The program will start with a presentation of colors, followed by comments on Memorial Day, and the reading of the names of those from Fairfax who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Wolf Trap’s summer season kicks off with fireworks—both on stage and in the sky! “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, the longest standing professional music organization in the US with over 225 years of delighting audiences, performs favorites from popular musicals like The Music Man and marching standards from the Armed Forces’ distinguished songbook. The evening caps off with a spectacular fireworks display.
